Brentwood Outdoor Pursuits hosts Whitewater Event on the Cowichan River

Cr1

This past weekend saw kayakers from throughout the Pacific Northwest descend on the rapids of the Cowichan River for an exciting and challenging whitewater kayak race.

Water levels were slightly higher than usual and this challenged the likes of National Champion Jazmyne Den Hollander as well as intimidating some of the less experienced racers. Despite the challenge, Den Hollander was the class of the field and posted the fastest time of the day, completing the course without any penalty and beating all of her competitors in the women’s class. While this is not an unusual result from the 2008 and 2009 National Champion, at this race she also beat all of the men who competed on the same course in other classes. Den Hollander is a grade ten student from Chilliwack who will be vying for a spot on the senior women’s national team during team selection races to be held in Whistler on the May long weekend.

On Saturday, several paddlers who were training on the course chose to decline competing, however, there were 16 hardy kayakers who put on their spraydecks and showed up at the start line for Sunday’s race.  The spectrum of ability within the field was broad, with some competitors who had only single digits in the “days of experience” column, while others topped the 20 years of racing scales. Evan Tudor-Jones of Cobble Hill is only 11 years old, but was able to complete the course without missing any gates and placed 3rd in the  Junior men’s events which includes racers up to 18 years of age.

An annual event hosted by Canoe Kayak BC and the Outdoor Pursuits program at Brentwood College, the Cowichan S-bend Slalom Race involves kayakers negotiating 17 gates hung over a class three whitewater rapid. Competitors count the better of their two attempts at running through the gates in the correct sequence. Total time on the course is added to penalty seconds assessed for touching or missing gates, and the fastest time wins in each class. Full results are below.
