Students from Thompson Rivers University’s Carpentry Program recently provided the rowing, canoe/kayak facilities at Shumway Lake with a much needed facelift. In preparation for the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games, six stake boats, a start tower and a finish tower were constructed as part of the upgrades to the facilities, located fifteen minutes south of Kamloops.

The Kamloopa Sportsclub and the Kamloops 2011 Western Canada Summer Games Society hosted a BBQ at Shumway Lake on June 15 to show their appreciation to the sixteen students and their teacher Mark Gadsby. Jeff Morgan, Project Manager for the Shumway Lake upgrades was very appreciative of TRU’s contribution and expressed his gratitude to the class and their teacher; “We are very thankful for the time and commitment that Mark Gadsby and his students from TRU have given to this project. It was an essential upgrade for the 2011 Games and will be a legacy for the rowing and canoeing/kayak community.”

The Kamloops 2011 Western Canada Summer Games received a Federal Recreation Infrastructure Canada (RiNC) grant earlier this year, to assist with upgrades to the outdated facilities at Shumway Lake. The overall project is valued at over $100,000 with cash and in-kind contributions from RiNC, the 2011 WCSG, the Kamloopa Sportsclub (Kamloops Rowing Club, Kamloops Canoe/Kayak Club), Rebel Fiberglass, TRUE Consulting Group, and TRU Carpentry Program.

The Kamloops 2011 Western Canada Summer Games will take place August 5th to 14th, 2011. The Games’ Presenting Sponsor is British Columbia Lottery Corporation with core funding provided by the Province of British Columbia, through the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport and by the City of Kamloops.
