Additions to World Championships Team

Women’s Canoe and Paracanoe athletes added to Canadian World Championships Team

OTTAWA – CanoeKayak Canada has added four athletes to its team for the 2013 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships taking place in Duisburg, Germany from August 27 to September 1.

Sarah-Jane Caumartin of Otterburn, QC joins the team after winning a C2 500 metre race-off with her partner Laurence Vincent-Lapointe of Trois-Rivières, QC at the Lake Placid International Regatta in New York State on Saturday. The tie-breaker win also adds an extra race for Vincent-Lapointe in C2 who already made the team in the C1 200 metre. The crew has shown their strength internationally this season by winning two ICF World Cup gold medals several weeks ago.

Vincent-Lapointe and Caumartin won the tie-breaker in a time of 2:04.28 and beat out Taylor Potts of Toronto and Maria Halavrezos of Dartmouth, NS by 3.86 seconds. In a best two out of three race selection format, Potts and Halavrezos won Trials 2 to force a race-off for the Senior World Championships C2 spot and secured the entry for the Under 23 World Championships in Welland, ON from August 1 to 4.

CanoeKayak Canada’s High Performance Committee has also named three additional team members in Paracanoe events. Paracanoe athletes compete in single kayak (K1) and va’a canoe (V1) and are classified based on the mobility they have in their legs, trunk and arms (LTA, TA and A).

Papito More-Wilson of Toronto will race in the Men’s V1 LTA. Suleiman Muse of Toronto will race the Men’s K1 in the A category. Christian Maranda of Quebec City will race Men’s K1 LTA. Troy Chown of Ottawa was also nominated to the team in Men’s K1 TA and has declined his nomination. He will race at the Pan American Championships in Puerto Rico in October with his teammates.

CanoeKayak Canada is the national governing body for competitive paddling in Canada. The organization’s vision is to be a Canadian sport for families, communities and champions.
