Canada wins 35 medals, 15 gold at Sprint Pan American Canoe Championships

PONCE, PUERTO RICO – The Sprint Pan American Canoe Championships took place in Ponce, Puerto Rico from Friday to Sunday and Canada managed a total of thirty-five medals – including fifteen gold, thirteen silver and seven bronze. With the Pan American Games less than two years away, Canadian athletes are gearing up for a big showing on home water at Toronto 2015.

Performance highlights of the Championships included three golds by Madeline Schmidt of Ottawa in the Junior K1 500, 200 and 5000. The Pan American Championships wrapped up a big season for Schmidt who captured at Junior World bronze medal in the K1 200 in early August.

The K2 pair of Hayley Nelson of Waverley, NS and Ailish McNulty of Dartmouth, NS won two gold medals in the Junior 500 and 200 metre.

Pierre-Luc Poulin of Lac Beauport, QC won double gold with wins in the Junior Men’s K1 200 and 500 metre. The Junior C2 crew of Sarah-Jane Caumartin of Otterburn, QC and Mariah Godin of Dartmouth, NS also made it two gold medals with victories in the 200 and 500.

Evan Bezemer of Mississauga, ON and Jeremy Stott of Oakville, ON chipped in a gold in the Junior C2 200 to make for an even ten gold medals in Junior events. Bezemer and Stott also won silver in the C2 1000.

In Senior events, all five gold medals came in the singles events. Ottawa’s Angus Mortimer scored a gold in the K1 1000. Andreanne Langlois of Québec City won the Senior Women’s K1 200 and Tamlyn Bohm of Mississauga was victorious in the Senior Women’s K1 500.

In women’s canoe events, Toronto’s Taylor Potts claimed the top spot in the C1 200 and Maria Halavrezos of Dartmouth, NS hauled in a win in the C1 5000. Potts and Halavrezos also teamed up to win two silver medals in the C2 500 and 200 metre races.

Hannah MacIntosh of Dartmouth, NS won three silver medals in the Junior C1 500, 200 and 5000. Three silvers also came in men’s canoe events with Cory Rublee of Kamloops, BC placing second in the Senior C1 200, Marc Tarling of Pointe-Claire, QC taking silver in Senior C1 5000 and Craig Spence of Waverley NS adding a silver in the Junior C1 5000.

Other silver medalists included Alex Scott of Halifax, NS and Liam O’Brien of Dartmouth, NS in the Junior K2 1000 and the Senior Women’s K4 500 metre crew of Andreanne Langlois (Québec, QC), Tamlyn Bohm (Mississauga, ON) Jillian D’Alessio (Sackville, NS) & Alana Bray-Lougheed (Burlington, ON).
