The 2014 Canadian Surfski Championships presented by CMW Insurance will take place on August 23rd in British Columbia’s picturesque ‘Sea to Sky’ region just north of Vancouver. The race will be hosted by the Squamish Paddling Club, a grassroots paddling club aimed at introducing residents of all ages into the multi-disciplines of paddle sports. The 21 km race uses a well known downwind route that organizers are confident will attract international and regional paddlers alike. The steep sided mountains bordering Howe Sound help create consistently strong summer afternoon thermal winds taking paddlers from Porteau Cove to the town of Squamish. As paddlers near Squamish harbour, the thermals increase with intensity and the waves become confused thanks to the strong currents from the powerful out flowing Squamish River. The 16 foot tide and some of the coldest year round water temperatures in the area thrown in the mix create some interesting conditions as racers will approach the finish of the race.
