Matthew Koehler (Ridge) wins gold medal

Matthew Koehler (Ridge) won  gold in the junior men’s K1 1000m at the national team trials and qualified for the junior world championships.

Two B.C. paddlers were selected to represent Canada at the upcoming World Championships in Minsk, Belarus. The teams were selected following this past weekend’s National Team Trials in Montreal.

Following a victory in the junior men’s K-1 1000m, Matthew Koehler (Ridge) was selected for Team Canada for the Junior World Championships.

Joining Koehler is Brian Malfesi (Ridge) who will compete at the U23 World Championships, also in Minsk. Despite suffering from illness during the trials, he met the minimum qualifying standards.

Other B.C. results from the National Team Trials

Alex Brent (Ridge) had a positive weekend and placed 12th (10th for U23s) in the Senior Men’s K-1 1000m and third in the U23 Men’s K-2 1000m. He partnered with Zach Cameron from Trois Riviere.

In her first National Team Trials, Lauryn Cheung  (Fort Langley) had a great competition and gained valuable experience for future years.  Cheung was 24th in the Junior Women’s K-1 500m and 21st in the K-1 200m.

The 2016 ICF Junior and U23 World Championships take place in Minsk, Belarus from July 28 to 31.
